Conference on the "The Heritage of Migrant Labour in South(ern) Africa" in Johannesburg

Khanya College, an NGO that i.e. strives to preserve working class heritage and has offered popular education for disadvantaged communities for over 20 years, hosts a conference on the "Heritage of Migrant Labour in South(ern) Africa" at the Workers' Museum in central Johannesburg, South Africa, between the 11-13th of September 2008. The conference forms the public session of the 2008 Annual Conference of the IALHI (International Association of Labour History Institutions, www.ialhi.org) and targets a wide range of practitioners and activists, particularly from Africa, who have an interest and experience in promoting and preserving working class heritage. While the conference focus is labour migration in the Southern African region in a historic perspective, issues of preservation, archiving, intangible forms, popular culture, female migration, gender patterns, and (inter)national heritage and labour policies will be discussed.
