New Assistant Director-General for Culture at UNESCO
Ms Françoise Rivière (France) has been appointed Assistant Director- General for Culture of UNESCO. Since November 1999, she had been Director of the Cabinet of the UNESCO Director-General. Ms Rivière took up her duties on May 29. Born in 1950, Ms Françoise Rivière (France), a former student at the Ecole Normale Supérieure, holds an agrégation in classics and a diploma of the Institut d’Etudes Politiques in Paris (France). She began her career in 1974 as an assistant lecturer at Yale University (United States of America), then at the University of Paris, Val de Marne (France). From 1977 to 1980, she was an educational adviser to the Bureau of Personnel of the United Nations Office at Geneva (Switzerland) and then, from 1981, technical adviser to the French National Commission for UNESCO.
Joining UNESCO in 1981, she performed various duties in the Office of the Director-General before becoming Director of the Bureau of Studies and Programming with the rank of Assistant Director-General.
