The
Museum of Malawi, also known as the Chichiri Museum,
is located beside the civic centre of Blantyre at
Chichiri, and is the major exhibition centre for both
the natural and cultural heritage of the country.
The Museum
interprets both natural history and ethnology collection
to the people of Malawi through its main exhibition
hall. Public programming includes guided tours, lectures,
film screenings, traditional dances, contemporary
music, drama, and museum-related excursions. In
addition, the Museum’s Education Department
has embarked on a series of mobile museum programmes
in an effort to reach the country’s rural school
children.
The Museum
building houses a section on the natural history of
Malawi, including display cases on Lengwe and Liwonde
National Parks with mounted specimens. There is also
a large collection of insects and an exhibit on geological
samples including the machinga meteorite of 1981.
In the main hall is
the ethnology section where exhibits trace the history
of humankind in Malawi from pre-history to the era
of independence. On the Museum grounds, outside the
main building, are a series of open-air exhibits documenting
the modernization of transport in Malawi.
