AFRICOM PROGRAMME PRIORITIES 2004-2006

Priorities

Intangible Cultural Heritage
There is growing awareness of the value of intangible heritage - the full set of practices, representations, expressions, knowledge and skills which communities and groups recognize as part of their heritage. In addition to being intrinsically fragile, it is also subject to many potential causes of disappearance. AFRICOM is committed to the promotion and protection of intangible African cultural heritage and, at the same time, will continue to undertake activities with regards to Illicit Traffic and Conflict Resolution, two themes for which the organisation has years of expertise.

Professional Development
AFRICOM encourages and facilitates the sharing of experience between professionals. The institution is committed to enhancing the skills and knowledge of African heritage professionals to increase their effectiveness and support their actions within their communities.

Networking of institutions and professionals on the continent
Building a network of heritage professionals and institutions in Africa has been the main aim of AFRICOM and the Secretariat works daily to increase and strengthen the network of individuals and bodies concerned with museums and cultural heritage in Africa.
